Sir John Eliot Gardiner And The Budapest Festival Orchestra

VenuePalace of Arts Müpa Budapest
CalendarSun 04 Oct 2026 - Tue 06 Oct 2026
Synopsis/Details

The legendary conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner is coming to lead the Festival Orchestra for the first time. The holder of an honorary doctorate from Budapest‘s Liszt Academy and a multiple Grammy Award-winner, he first became globally renowned for his performances of early music, but he also delights in exploring the world of Romanticism. Whether conducting Haydn or Sibelius, he works with “unstoppable energy” (The Guardian) – and it is precisely these two composers this programme focusses on. Although the two composers may appear to have little in common, the duality of love for one‘s homeland and a cosmopolitan worldview runs like a guiding thread throughout the evening. The centrepiece is Haydn’s London triumph – the symphony he composed after finally freeing himself from decades of service at the Esterházy court, while the concert concludes with a Sibelius symphony inspired by a trip to Italy. As an overture, the musicians of the Budapest Festival Orchestra will once again demonstrate their skills as a choir, performing the Finnish composer’s heart-rending song, Sydämeni laulu (Song of My Heart).

Venue
Palace of Arts Müpa Budapest

When Müpa Budapest, Hungary and its capital's new cultural hub, opened in 2005, it was built to represent more than 100 years of Hungarian cultural history. As a conglomeration of cultural venues, the building has no precedent in 20th century Hungarian architecture and has no peers in the whole of Central Europe.

The creators of this ambitious project, the Trigránit Development Corporation, prime contractor Arcadom Construction and the Zoboki, Demeter and Partners Architectural Office, were driven by the desire to create a new European cultural citadel as part of the new Millennium City Centre complex along the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Danube waterfront. The result is a facility whose construction quality, appearance, functionality and 21st century technological infrastructure makes it ideally suited to productions of the highest standard. The building is also highly versatile and equipped to host performances of any genre and almost any scale.
