Verdi’s Nabucco Returns to Margaret Island
Following one of the greatest audience successes of the 2025 season, Verdi’s monumental opera Nabucco returns to the stage of the Margaret Island Theatre in summer 2026. With its powerful music, biblical grandeur and exceptional cast, the production promises another unforgettable operatic experience.
Kálmándy Mihály, Kossuth Prize-winning baritone and permanent member of the Society of Immortals, returns in the title role of Nabucco. The role has played a defining part in his career: he made his debut as Nabucco while still a student at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, before launching his international career with a production of Verdi’s masterpiece at Teatro Verdi Trieste. Since then, he has appeared on many of the world’s most prestigious opera stages.
Boross Csilla returns as Abigaille, reaching a remarkable milestone in 2026: she will perform Verdi’s legendary heroine for the 150th time. Her international career was launched by the role in 2011 in Rome, under the baton of Riccardo Muti. Since then, she has portrayed Abigaille on some of the world’s leading opera stages, captivating audiences with her extraordinary vocal power and compelling stage presence.
The role of Zaccaria, the High Priest of the Hebrews, will once again be performed by András Palerdi, whose commanding bass and exceptional expressive depth lend profound dignity to this embodiment of faith and hope.
Szilvia Vörös makes her debut at the Margaret Island Theatre as Fenena. The acclaimed mezzo-soprano brings her warm, velvety voice and sensitive stage presence to the role of Nabucco’s daughter, whose character offers a lyrical and deeply human counterpoint to the opera’s world of power, conflict and faith.
Riccardo Gatto also returns to Margaret Island as Ismaele, following his acclaimed appearance in last year’s production. The Venice-born tenor once again takes on the role of the nephew of the King of Jerusalem.
Verdi’s timeless masterpiece, last season’s celebrated artists and exciting new encounters – Nabucco returns in summer 2026 as one of the highlights of the Margaret Island Theatre’s opera season.
